Viva Il Palio, Siena, Italy

Join us for Viva Il Palio in July, combining a relaxed informal motoring tour of Tuscany with the most spectacular horse race on earth. Exquisite hotels, gourmet cuisine, breath-taking views and a five-day, four-night party with friends old and new.

A picturesque 100-mile route south through the Tuscan hills and the rolling Chianti vineyards, into Umbria.

Viva Il Palio begins when you fly into Florence airport. We will collect you from the airport and whisk you to a Tuscan villa where you will meet your fellow guests for lunch in the gardens. If you have requested for us to transport your car, it will be here on your arrival.

The routes are meticulously researched and each day we will be issuing turn-by-turn directions. We will arrive at the hotel (where we will be staying for the first 2 nights of the event) by around 5:00pm, allowing plenty of time to check-in and relax before pre-dinner drinks on the terrace.

The hotels for Viva Il Palio are both historic buildings, lavishly but sympathetically renovated into 5-star hotels, offering a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. Borgo Dei Conti, our first hotel, is a 13th Century castle perched on a hillside overlooking Umbria’s Nestor Valley.

We head south through the hills of Umbria for lunch at a castillo on the outskirts of the ancient town of Orvieto.

After breakfast and a short drivers’ briefing, the day’s adventure will begin. There will be plenty of time to stop en route for a coffee and to take in the breath-taking views. Lunches will be relaxed and informal affairs celebrating local specialities al fresco.

The afternoon’s route will take us north, skirting the Monte Rufeno nature reserve on the Umbria-Lazio border. We’ll be stopping at a vineyard en route to sample some local wines, before we arrive back at Borgo Dei Conti in time to relax by the pool before cocktails and dinner.

Today’s route will take us off the beaten track as we explore ancient hilltop villages, enjoying some of the most famous views in all of Europe. The driving here is spectacular, with quiet roads that snake through the undulating countryside.

This morning we’ll be packing our bags and bidding farewell to Borgo Dei Conti as we head west and then north for Tuscany (our support team will take care of transporting your luggage throughout the tour, so when packing for the trip there’s no need to be limited by the size of your boot).

Our home for the next 2 nights will be Castel Monastero, a former monastery that dates back to the 11th Century, just a few miles north east of Siena. This tranquil retreat, one of the finest hotels in the region, is surrounded by vineyards and chestnut forests, and we will arrive in plenty of time to enjoy the extensive facilities here. There will be pre-dinner drinks in the courtyard before a feast in the vaulted medieval cellars.

Today is the climax of our Tuscan adventure, and after a morning drive and a lazy lunch in Radda in Chianti, we will head for Siena and the spectacle of Il Palio di Siena.

This extraordinary event, which dates back to the early 17th Century, is a bare-back horse race contested twice each year between ten of Siena’s seventeen districts around the main piazza.

The festivities, which are steeped in history and proud tradition, begin with a pageant through the packed streets before the jockeys, the horses and the representatives of the competing districts parade around Piazza del Campo. Then at 7:30pm the race begins, and the horses tear around the square for the spectacular 3 lap contest, before the winner is declared and the celebrations begin. The centre of the square is packed with thousands of spectators but we will have privileged seats and hospitality on the outside of the square, with excellent views of all the action.

Il Palio is one of Italy’s most remarkable events and the atmosphere on race day is like nothing else. Dinner this evening will be in the heart of the festivities as we join the locals in their celebrations in a nearby square. Transport will be on hand to return us to Castel Monastero.

Depending on your travel arrangements home, this morning is about relaxing before the farewell lunch in the courtyard at Castel Monastero. There is an option to extend your stay for a night or two, and we can also make hotel recommendations and reservations for you in Florence. Your car will be returned home to you just a few days after the event finishes.

Viva Il Palio will be a unique and unforgettable adventure and we hope you will join us.

All classic and sports cars, old and new, are eligible for entry to Viva Il Palio.
